Thursday was Event #6 in the WCOOP which happened to be NL Holdem with rebuys. I did my usual immediate rebuy to double my stack. I played pretty solid through the rebuy period and doubled up pretty early on with JJ vs AKo when we got it all in on a JQK flop and I even turned another J for quads. That was enough to give me a very nice stack since the blind structure in these events is great. I of course added on after the rebuy period so I was in for a total of $615, which is the least you should expect to be in for in a rebuy tourney (3x buyin). There turned out to be 2081 entries, 2503 rebuys, and 1337 addons making the prize pool just under $1.2mil.
I continued to play well through the rest of the tourney but went card dead as we got down to about 500-600 people left. I went from an above average stack to being one of the shortest as we got down to about 350 people left. With the top 270 making the money, which started at just over $1k, I was hoping to survive until then. On top of being card dead though I was at tables with active players which makes it pretty much impossible to increase your stack without catching a hand as every pot is usually raised or reraised.
When we got down to about 300 people I picked up QQ in the small blind and decided that I was going to have to make a stand with the hand as I was down to about 8 big blinds. There was a raise from an early position player and then the button reraised. I called all-in and the first raiser thought for a bit before finally folding and saying that he had AQ. The guy on the button flipped up AK and we were in a coinflip situation but I was about a 60% favorite. The flop came J high and it looked like I was going to more than triple up with a brick on the turn but the K on the river killed my chances and I was out about 30 people from the money.
So another dissapointing finish but I really don't think I could have played the tourney much differently. Friday is a limit holdem tournament with a $215 buyin that I don't plan on playing as I haven't played much limit in awhile and would rather have Friday night off. I'll be back at it Saturday though with Event #9 $530 PL Holdem for sure and probably Event #8 $215 HORSE (two events in one day on Saturday). HORSE is a mix of 5 games: limit Holdem, limit Omaha, Razz, 7 card Stud, 7 card stud Eight or better(or known as stud hi/low). The games change every level and it's usually a fun event. I do't think I'm great at any one of the games but I think I can play each of them fairly well.
